Location name:
Prosperity Lake
Location in city:
West
Level of freedom:
Accessible to everyone
Level of infestation:
Guarded
Location description:
Serving as the city's primary water supply, Prosperity Lake is perhaps half the size of Vitae's city grounds and would most definitely take some time to traverse. Keenly appreciated by locals for the pretty view it provides, the Lake once served as a means of entertainment and luxury (with motorboat racing, jet skiing and fishing boats being quite the common occurrence). The reservoir exists at a slighter lower altitude than that of the city, allowing one to gaze far across the pale blue expanse towards the distant shrub land opposite. The waters are relatively undisturbed, lapping gently at rocky banks that frame the west side of the city landscape. Waters run thickly into the main body from north of the city and travel in a broad river towards the south, across which the infamous Redemption Crossing stretches. Numerous wooden jetties have been built along the east side of the lake, allowing civilians to fish in deeper waters and observe the sandy ecosystem closer to land. If one is careful enough, they can lower themselves from the jetty into the shallows in pursuit of small catfish, crabs or eels.
Not much has changed about the Lake since Vitae's fall, except the locale has seemed to have grown somewhat quieter and somewhat dormant since. The waters have miraculously remained uncontaminated, and continue to offer a viable drinking and food source (for how long however, no one can say). The lake view is undoubtedly a relaxing sight regardless of recent events, coercing many to forget about their harsh reality as they stare into the water's depths and reminisce prosperous times. Moreover, the zombie count in this area is slight, although such creatures have by no doubt been sighted ambling around in unsightly ruination of the peace, although this is not too much of a deterrent to those well-guarded. Whilst most tackle-shops and boat services nearby have been raided since, if one manages to lay their hands on a fishing rod/bait, intact canoe or happen to fuel a boat, they may find the lake poses some wholesome fun to be had in this otherwise morose day and age.
Sub-territories:
Redemption Crossing
The atmosphere pervading Redemption Crossing contrasts starkly to that of Prosperity Lake, having something of an augural and unsettling air about it... even in absence of the wretched undead. Before the birth of the New World, the crossing was merely a long concrete bridge that stretched across the river travelling south of Prosperity Lake. People would commute to and from the city via this western passage, tar-laden roads eventually merging into dirt roads as one travels further into shrub land. However, due to disuse, many of these roads have been overgrown or are ambiguous in direction, rendering this passage a risk to use in hopes of traversing between cities.
Supported by numerous steel beams, rusted by age and overgrown with weeds, the railings that line the crossing are relatively low and allow a clear view of the billowing surface of the murky river tens of feet below. The waters beneath the bridge are certainly deep enough to send a boat across and underneath the crossing... however, in consideration of the river current, swimming is dangerous. It is for this reason that Redemption Crossing is considered a suicide hotspot; sending oneself off the edge of the bridge is bound to carry them across roiling currents difficult to swim against, and far from any likely help. Those who would subject themselves to such a thing are darkly suggested to be in search of 'redemption', a morbid notion from which the crossing earns its name. Considering the bridge is largely unvisited, it has not seen many zombies, but this is unnecessary in creating a silent and disheartening atmosphere that has accompanied many a lost life in their final moments.
